Brief Case Study

Silicon Mechanics, Bothell, WA.

Silicon Mechanics is a leading manufacturer of rack-optimized computer servers, storage and high performance computing products.  The company provides rack-optimized servers and storage equipment directly to IT end users.

Global Logistics, Inc. (GLI) became involved with Silicon Mechanics in November, 2006.  Silicon Mechanics President was attending a business seminar and heard GLI Director of Business Development Joe Barrer give a presentation on Transportation Management.

The topic of Transportation Management was of interest their President as his company was going through a major growth cycle and needed assistance in the area of daily Traffic Management.  GLI conducted a thorough analysis of Silicon Mechanic’s Supply Chain and identified multiple areas needing improvement.  Silicon Mechanics retained the services of GLI in December of the same year.

GLI went to work immediately looking at inbound shipments from their major suppliers.  Their largest supplier was located in the Silicon Valley and Silicon was using an expedited freight carrier to receive thousands of pounds of palletized freight per week.  Silicon needed freight to be delivered in the morning and chose this mode in order to keep with Just-In-Time Inventory Management.  Using proper mode utilization, GLI identified a carrier who could meet the service requirements for 60 percent less than the cost of the incumbent carrier.

GLI then negotiated a new contract and consolidated small package carriers while reducing costs by 22 percent.  In addition, GLI identified locations in the United States and Europe where the carrier was failing to meet their time in transit guarantees.  By holding the carrier accountable, GLI recovered nearly $20,000 in guaranteed time in transit refunds as well as identifying where the service failures were occurring.  This motivated the carrier to quickly fix the processes that were causing service failures.

After demonstrating capability, Silicon Mechanics then turned over the management of their most sensitive shipments, the assembled computer rack servers and data storage systems, to GLI.  These shipments require very close supervision and handling and Silicon Mechanics was using a carrier who met their strict delivery requirements, but at a very high cost.  The servers are wrapped in padded blankets and the trucks moving the shipments had to be equipped with air ride suspension systems to prevent vibration damage. Most of these shipments are in major metropolitan areas such as New York City and require not only specific appointment times, but also exclusive use of parking spaces and freight elevators.  GLI identified a carrier who has offered superior service while reducing freight cost by nearly 50 percent.

GLI has now managed all freight activities for Silicon Mechanics for over one year.  This includes carrier dispatch, freight bill audits, claims filing and resolution, trade show shipments, carrier payable and management reports as well as many other activities done by an internal Traffic Department.  This has allowed Silicon Mechanics warehouse personnel to focus their energy on the internal logistics associated with a manufacturing company experiencing explosive growth.

Silicon Mechanics is sometimes required to fill a customer order with extremely tight time tables.  As in any business, mistakes are sometimes made when time is tight. The customer called in the order to Silicon Mechanics at 3:00 pm on a Friday afternoon and needed to get three pallets of equipment weighing 1800 pounds to Paris, France by 10:00 am Monday morning.  GLI personnel not only dispatched the shipment in time for pick up that day, but also tracked the shipment throughout the weekend to monitor its movement through the carrier’s network.  When a problem developed, delaying the shipment in transit, GLI was able to get the most critical pallet delivered to the customer by the 10:00 am deadline.  The remaining pallets were located and delivered the next morning without delaying the timeline for installation of the equipment.  GLI recovered over $8000 for the carrier’s failure to ship as guaranteed.  This important customer ordered additional product to be shipped throughout Europe.  GLI went to work on making sure the paperwork for Customs was complete and accurate before the orders were placed.  All subsequent shipments arrived without delay after GLI identified and corrected potential problems with the Customs paperwork.

GLI performs these and other tasks for over 30 other clients on a daily basis.  The team at GLI has over 300 years combined transportation experience on both the carrier and traffic manager sides of the freight equation.

“GLI is the only supplier
 I’ve worked with
in my professional career
that has done
 everything they promised
exactly the way
 they said they would.”

President, Silicon Mechanics
